GSD is a serious and permanent metabolic condition centered in the liver. Children with GSD are prone to hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood glucose levels), which at any time could cause a brain seizure, a coma or lead to death. Over 50% of infants who survive the initial crisis of GSD experience reoccurring liver & kidney tumors, anemia & blood clotting problems among other complications .
Due to its’ rarity, GSD is classified as an “orphan disease”, which means there is no commercial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to work on a cure. However, there are a number of dedicated scientists working at several research institutions committed to finding cure - the main thing that they lack is funding. The Children’s Fund for GSD Research is our public 501c3 non-profit foundation with a mission to fund GSD research. We are a 100% volunteer organization.
