What is Glycogen Storage Disease?
Glycogen Storage Disease, Type 1 (GSD1) is a rare genetic metabolic disorder that occurs when a specific liver enzyme is either missing or not functioning. Children with the disorder are unable to metabolize glucose, which fuels every cell in our body, including brain activity. They require 24-hour a day treatment, with constant monitoring for hypoglycemia, a symptom that can cause brain seizure, coma and death. Complications, including liver and kidney tumors, increase with age. A simple cold or flu can spiral into a life-threatening situation if not treated properly.
Currently, there is no cure for GSD1. The condition is managed by diet modifications,
which is a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week, lifelong endeavor. Poor glucose control
or missed meals can have catastrophic effects.
It is not known how many children die of GSD without having been properly diagnosed.
The Children's Fund is committed to funding research so that children born with GSD1 will benefit from early detection, treatment and an eventual cure. Because every child deserves to be healthy.
